Last week-end I went to a local annual used photographic equipment swap meet, or flea market, call it what you will... What struck me is how much it had shrunk since last year, and how the stuff that had interested me last year was not there this year...
There were interesting things, mind you, a 13x18 Technika, a 30x40 19th century english tailboard camera, countless stereo cards, a nice big brass portrait lens, even one of those nifty casket lens sets. The catch? all of that stuff can be had for less that half the price on E-Bay...

In late September, LF and ULF users from all over gathered in a remote village in Norway for a long weekend of LF photography.
It all started with a light comment - "maybe we should meet up somewhere" between myself and another Norwegian LF'er. Maybe it would have ended there, if that comment hadn't been made in English, on an international forum? Anyway the reaction was immediate, and we realised that this was going to turn into an international event - so we'd better start planning!
Choosing a place in Norway for photography is not easy. Choosing a place for photography in late autumn is a little easier, as it eliminates the darkest places (most of the north), the wettest places (most of the west coast), and the coldest places (most of the inland). I finally chose Loen for several reasons: It's near enough to the coast to have a mild climate. It's inland enough to have a drier climate than the coast, and it's far enough south that the light (if any) would be good. The area also has some of the most dramatic landscape of anywhere on the planet.

The first days of the new Mamut have been great, the response has been incredible. Last week, I've had more that 500 visitors on the new website, from all over the globe. And I found that rather surprising. I was under the impression, from various forums, that the ULF and alternative processes movement was mainly a north american thing, but I've received just as many visits from Europe than from the US, and perhaps even more...

During the first ten days of the new Mamut, we asked you how big you were shooting, and here are the results:
Tiny (35mm and medium format) : 11 - 10%
Small (4x5 to 8x10) : 66 - 60%
Panoramic (5x12, 7x17, 8x20) : 11 - 10%
Medium (11x14, 12x20) : 10 - 9.1%
Large (14x17, 16x20) : 9 - 8.2%
Mamut (18x22, 20x24) : 3 - 2.7%
I'm happy to see that a lot of you are shooting at least 4x5, and that close to 30% are indeed ULF shooters!

Out of all the comments that I've received over the la st week on the new interface of the Mamut Photo website, I think the best probably that it made the information so much easier to find. I really glad that it does, because that's what it is all about. |

As you might have seen, Mamut photo has undergone (and is still
undergoing...) major changes in it's structure and look. The look
should remain familiar to you, and hopefully the navigation will be
clearer between sections of the website, which will help you discover
new ressources !
One
major improvement is the closer integration of the forum as well as my
blog which is being integrated into this website. You will also have
the possibility of contributing to the content of Mamut Photo, by
submitting review and articles.
For the next few weeks, keep your eyes open, and don't hesitate to give me a shout if you have any issues with the website !

It's been now three months since i've written anything on this page, and it's time to get back to business ! Photography has been a little neglected in my life lately, and should take back it's rightful place. |

This week's picture is kind of a re-warm-up to get me back on track. I've already skipped a number of weeks so I Have to make up for lost time with extra photos, but for now I'm gonna get back to one per week... |

I'm a techie... I'm also a Treckie, but that's an issue for another Blog. I can't help but see photographs as technical pieces, I can't help but to try an analyse the technique involved in any picture I see... |

Photographers make images, it's the same as saying that bakers made breads or policemen write parking tickets. It's a simple truth that can be a problem for some photographers, who rely only on their images, and not on the presentation around it, or on the image they themselves project. |
