I bit the apple and it tasted good.
Well here it goes... I go to an art school here in Vancouver, BC. I've been told it is one of the best ones in the continent.Emily Carr institute. We have a digital output studio, where we have a large format Epson 4800 printer that can print upto 43" wide and 100s of feet long. So i decided to taste the capacities of this rig with my large format negatives. I took a 4x5 velvia slide to a microtek 1800f scanner along with a gorgeous 8x10 negative i made of a local waterfall. Scanned them both in 2400ppi and resized for a 16x20 output.. After applying the necessary convertions for the specific paper i was going to use (Ilford smooth pearl for the velvia and Epson enhance matt for the 8x10 neg) i was ready to print. these files were both around 300mb and print resolution was 360dpi with the printer set for a 720dpi print.
I was very anxious to see the results. 4 hours later I got back my prints. I was speechless. Fantastic reproduction. colors perfectly matched the files and they looked so sharp I felt like I was getting a paper cut by just looking at them. To say the least, I am very impressed by the current high-end output equipment. I framed the photographs and sold them for great prices in 2 days. This doesnt mean i will be leaving my lovely Kodak Azo anytime soon but for fast large format printing i dont think you can beat this setup for efficiency and speed, not to mention the great control you have over the entire proccess.. keep shooting...thats all that matters.. |
